What to Expect from a Homestay

Are you thinking of choosing a homestay for your trip abroad? We are sure you will love your trip abroad. Not only is staying with the family of the host of your homestay an excellent opportunity to practice your English outside the classroom, but you will also pick up unique tips and tricks for your destination that tourists won't know about. Staying with the family of the host of your homestay while you study is true cultural and language immersion.

Before you arrive

You will receive your host family’s email addresses and mobile numbers, and we encourage you to contact them before your trip. Most of the students do contact their host family and it is a great way for you all to get to know each other before you arrive at your destination. If you are a little nervous about your travels, getting to know your host will really help to put your mind at ease.

During your stay

Staying with the family of the host of your homestay is a wonderful way to experience your destination through the eyes of a local. The host of your homestay will be able to share their top tips with you about everything from the quickest route to school to the best museums to visit. They will give you exclusive insights into the local culture that you would never get from a guidebook or Google search.

All the host families are experienced in caring for international travelers and students. The host families will create a nurturing and safe environment that they themselves would like to be welcomed into, so you will feel right at home. While you are staying with them, you will be treated just like one of the family. You will even get to spend time with them in the evenings. You might play a board game, watch some TV series, or just chat about your day and how you are getting on at school. You will even get to eat breakfast with your host family, and usually, dinner too, unless you choose to cook your own meal or eat at a restaurant with friends.

What to bring to your homestay

Items like bed linen, towels, laundry facilities, and a phone for emergency use will all be provided. Make sure you bring any prescription medication you need and any personal items to make your room feel more like home. Other things to remember are:

  • Your passport and visa documents

  • Your mobile phone and charger

  • Enough cash for your stay

  • Travel adapter

  • Comfortable shoes for walking around your new city

  • Your laptop and study equipment like notebooks and pens

  • A journal for writing about your homestay experience

If you want, you can also bring a small gift for your host family to make them feel good- perhaps something that represents your own culture. It is completely optional, but it is a great way to introduce yourself and share something about your background.

That was all you should expect from a homestay. We hope you liked this article and it helped you to know how to make sure your homestay is one of the best homestays. For more such posts, make sure you watch this section closely.
